A new Contra game arrives and has changed its
gameplay... does it work?
|
 |
Story?:
Not much anything here. The game opens up with a rocket from space
hitting some city, than the shooting begins. There are short FMVs as you
play within and before missions explaining more detail about what is
going on. As you play you run into some strange characters, like a guy
called Plant Contra and Mystery G. The game is quite funny but it does
not really seem like they intended it to be, making it kind of weird.
You also meet up with one person that you are really on intersted in
meeting. But I will not tell.New Gameplay:
In past Contra games they were 2D side scrollers. In shattered
soldier it was still 2D but with 3D graphics. In Neo Contra you can now
move up, down, left, right, right-up, right-down, left-... well you get
the picture. The big question is that is it really better? For the most
part it seems alright. Occasionally it is difficult to target enemies
why you have to move around to shoot. You can hold L2 and strafe your
character around or R2 to keep your guy in one spot and you can spin in
circles to fire. Both help but it still difficult to get away from shots
and shoot enemies at the same time.

Way to Difficult or Way to Easy:
Here is were the game suffers greatly. If you feel that it is to
difficult on normal than turn it down to easy. The only problem is, is
that its to easy. Not only is the difficulty easy you get more lives as
well. 6X AS MUCH! You can only play the first four missions on easy and
than at the end it will say try normal. So if you are not a Contra champ
it is going to be quite difficult to beat it. Another point is there is
not a whole lot to the game after the missions. |
 |
Last Word:
Neo Contra is a fairly good game even when compared to with today's
standards. I feel that previous Contra games where better and the
gameplay was to as this one does not really work a whole lot for me.
Especially with this type of game it should stay a 2D side scroller. If
you are a contra fan definitely think about picking this up.

The Bottom Line: |
|
Gameplay: 7.0 |
| |
Easy to learn but still feels difficult maneuvering
at times. Shooting enemies is still fun though. |
|
Graphics: 6.5 |
| |
Looks like a first generation PS2 game, but some
cool effects. |
|
Sound: 6.5 |
| |
Music on the FMVs are horrible, menu music pumps
you up, and all the gun shots and explosions get the job done. Voices
however could use some work. |
|
Depth: 5.5 |
| |
Nothing to do really once you beat it. Fun with
another friend however and improving you rating is may get you back in
it |
|
Overall: 7.0 |
